Variants in shape can be helpful. As an example the turrets of older Russian tanks like the T-62 are rounded like a mushroom.
While on later models like the T-72 the mushroom shape is still visible, however, the top of the turret is flatter and the junction of the sides and top has a more distinctive angle.
