M84The location of the drive sprocket and the idler wheel can assist in identification. The normal rule is that the end of the vehicle that has the drive sprocket has the engine.

Most tanks have rear mounted engines like this Slovenian M-84.

BradleyHowever most APC's have front mounted engines like this US M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle.

2S3There are however exceptions to this rule as is the case with the Israeli Merkava which has the engine and drive sprocket in the front.
